The Book of Jude, Chapter 1 – Theme: Contending for the Faith
Question 1: Jude warns of ungodly people who turn the grace of God into license for immorality. How can believers identify and protect themselves against such individuals within their spiritual communities yet remain compassionate and humble?
Answer: Believers can know them by examining their actions against the principles stipulated in the Bible. On the other hand, one guards themselves by reading the word of God, seeking spiritual direction through prayer and accountability from one or more close believers. As for compassion and humility, believers behave imperfection and forgiveness over others, even as they hold to the truth.
Question 2: Jude reminds people of the past when God destroyed those who opposed his authority. Why is this story important for believers today?
Answer: The stories should remind believers not to disobey or oppose God’s will and thus be exposed to his wrath.
Question 3: Jude commends believers to keep themselves in God’s love, pray in the Spirit, and build themselves in faith. How can one practically do this?
Answer: It can be done by reading the Bible, attending church services, having fellowship with friends of faith, and engaging in church ministries.
Question 4: Jude uses metaphors to describe wandering stars as clouds without rain and false teachers. What do those metaphors mean regarding false teachers’ influence, and how can one avoid being their disciple?
Answer: False teachers appear promising or of correct stature, but end up failing. True believers can be safeguarded by proper biblical interpretation lessons.
Question 5: Finally, Jude teaches that one should treat people with doubt and others with some with mercy. How can one balance good treatment and setting boundaries to avoid their influence?
Answer: One can do these by being decisive on controversial issues and compassionate for people with doubt.
Closing Paragraph:
